Torino manager Ignazio Abate faces growing questions over his decision to keep backing Lucas Perri after a difficult start in Serie A. The Brazilian joined Torino from Leeds United on a season-long loan in August, with the club holding an option to make the move permanent.

Gaetano Mocciaro of TuttoMercatoWeb has reported that scrutiny around Perri is increasing after several shaky displays. Inside Futbol later detailed the report, highlighting questions over how long Abate can continue protecting the 28-year-old.

Perri endured a difficult Serie A debut against Fiorentina, while his next league outing against Roma brought another costly moment. Roma’s opening goal came after the goalkeeper made a poor decision in possession. Torino eventually lost 2-0.

Abate, though, has continued to defend his summer arrival. The Torino boss said Perri needs to regain his best condition and improve his decisions, while stressing his belief in the goalkeeper’s quality. Abate had cited the player’s recent injury, unfamiliar surroundings and new tactical demands.

That support faces a test. Perri has struggled to provide the reliability Torino expected, while the coaching staff have arranged individual work to help the goalkeeper adapt to Italian football. Confidence matters for a goalkeeper, yet repeated mistakes can quickly change the mood.

From Leeds ‘ perspective, a permanent sale in summer 2027 would make sense if Torino or another European club offer a workable deal. The Whites have already committed their goalkeeping future to James Trafford, who arrived from Manchester City in a club-record transfer this summer.

Trafford has since started strongly, giving Leeds a clear first-choice option under Daniel Farke. That makes Perri’s return particularly awkward. A 28-year-old goalkeeper returning from an unsuccessful loan would have little obvious route into the starting side, while keeping an expensive reserve on the wage bill could limit room for other squad needs.
