Chelsea’s long-running search for the right defensive profile has brought Alessandro Bastoni back into focus, with TeamTalk reporting that the Inter Milan defender remains firmly admired at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool and Manchester City are also in the picture, while Barcelona continue to monitor the situation, giving this the feel of a major transfer battle that could build across the coming windows.

Bastoni, now 27, has been regarded for some time as one of Europe’s elite centre-backs. The key detail in this latest update is the price. Inter previously held out for “close to £70million” and there is nothing to suggest their stance has softened. For any interested club, that immediately turns admiration into a serious strategic decision.

From a Chelsea perspective, the attraction is easy to understand. The report states that the Blues “remain admirers as they continue to shape their defence under Xabi Alonso”. That line matters, because it points to a specific tactical fit rather than a general appreciation of quality. Chelsea have “moved towards a back-three system”, and there is said to be a belief internally that they “could still be short of the ideal central figure to operate in that structure”.

That is where Bastoni stands out. He is comfortable defending wide spaces, composed when stepping into midfield zones, and progressive in possession. TeamTalk notes that “Bastoni’s ability to defend in a back-three, while also possessing the technical quality and passing range to contribute in possession, would make him an obvious fit for Alonso’s system.” It is difficult to argue with that assessment. If Chelsea are going to make another major move in the market, it makes sense that it would be for a player capable of improving the structure around him rather than simply adding numbers. Bastoni looks like that type.

Chelsea are far from alone. Liverpool are described as another club with serious interest, and the reporting is particularly striking on that front. That frames Bastoni as part of a longer-term defensive succession plan rather than a short-term opportunistic target.
