Transfer gossip often starts with a decent question and ends with a weak conclusion. Jordan Pickford to Bayern Munich sounded plausible on the surface, a senior international goalkeeper, a European giant planning for life after Manuel Neuer, and a club of Everton’s size supposedly vulnerable to a big offer. Scratch beneath it, though, and the idea quickly falls apart.

According to TEAMtalk , Bayern are not actively pursuing Pickford and, more importantly, they do not appear to view the Everton goalkeeper as the answer to their long-term succession plan. That matters because once the German club’s internal thinking becomes clear, the whole story changes shape. This is no longer about Bayern weighing up whether to sign Pickford. It is about Bayern deciding they may not need him at all.

The key point here is simple. Bayern believe they already have a pathway beyond Neuer. Jonas Urbig is regarded as a serious option and has benefited from learning alongside one of the great modern goalkeepers. If a club of Bayern’s scale truly sees Urbig as a future No 1, then their transfer priorities shift immediately. Instead of spending heavily on a ready-made starter, they look for a supporting piece.

That is where the reporting becomes more convincing. Bayern’s scouting focus is said to be leaning towards a high-level deputy rather than another headline goalkeeper. Finn Dahmen is mentioned in that context, and Leonard Prescott’s emergence adds another layer to the club’s planning. Prescott is only 17, but first-team exposure in 2026 tells you enough about Bayern’s confidence in him.

So the issue is not whether Pickford is good enough for Bayern. He is. The issue is whether Bayern want to block their own development line for Urbig and Prescott while Neuer decides how long he wants to continue. The answer, for now, appears to be no.

From Everton’s side, there is even less ambiguity. Pickford is under contract until 2029, the club do not want to sell, and the player himself has no apparent interest in forcing a move. Those are not minor details tucked away at the bottom of the story. They are the story.

Everton have spent years relying on Pickford in big moments, difficult spells and chaotic periods. He has outlasted managers, tactical resets and plenty of transfer speculation. The attraction for Everton is obvious. Reliable top-level goalkeepers are expensive, and replacing one with Premier League experience, international pedigree and dressing-room authority is rarely straightforward.

There is also a practical point that often gets ignored in transfer coverage. A deal only becomes live if all sides see an upside. Bayern seem unconvinced they need to move. Everton have no interest in selling. Pickford is settled. That does not leave much oxygen for a genuine transfer chase.
