📌 Key Highlights & Takeaways

Liverpool’s 6-3 win over LASK carried the sort of scoreline that can obscure as much as it reveals. On paper, it looks like chaos. In practice, it was control for long stretches, pressure applied with precision, and a forward line that found both rhythm and ruthlessness. By the time the game opened up in the final third, the contest had long since been shaped by Liverpool’s superior movement and technical clarity.

At the centre of it all were Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz, two attackers whose evening in Austria offered a vivid demonstration of why Andoni Iraola places such faith in them. Barcola scored a hat-trick, though his influence extended beyond the goals. He stretched the pitch, attacked the space behind LASK’s back line and repeatedly turned promising situations into dangerous ones. Wirtz, meanwhile, was the game’s organiser in advanced areas, knitting attacks together and giving Liverpool control with the ball.

Iraola’s assessment of Barcola was telling. “I’m really happy for Bradley,” he said post-match. “You were asking me yesterday about him not making the numbers, and also Florian [Wirtz].” It was a pointed reminder that output can arrive quickly when performance levels are sound. Barcola had more chances on the night, and that mattered almost as much as the three he converted. He was consistently available, consistently aggressive, and consistently difficult to contain.

Iraola added, “Both of them played really really well. They made the difference. Bradley, apart from the hat-trick, I think he was always a threat, one versus one, threatening in behind. I’m happy for both of them.” That sense of menace, repeated over and over, gave Liverpool their attacking edge.

Where Barcola supplied incision, Wirtz supplied order. Liverpool registered 26 shots in total, and much of that volume stemmed from the German’s ability to find space between lines and release runners at the right moment. His first-half display in particular brought shape to the attacking play, allowing Liverpool to move the ball with speed but without hurry.

Iraola said, “I think (Wirtz) was amazing in possession. I think he had lively passes, good assists, he helped us to control the game.” He continued, “Especially in the first half where he was roaming around and finding good spots. It was a good game from Florian.” Those are simple observations, though they describe a complex skill set, receiving under pressure, turning cleanly, and seeing the pass before the defence has set itself.

There were other notable contributions. Rio Ngumoha brought energy and unpredictability, while Lewis Koumas capped an impressive display with a goal and an assist. “Yes Reds! A great win away,” Koumas said on a video for club media. “Important to bounce back from the last game and buzzing to get on the scoresheet in the Champions League. See you soon.” His contribution carried historical weight too, making him only the second Liverpool player aged 21 or under to score and assist in a Champions League game after Steven Gerrard.

For Iraola, this was about more than a high-scoring away win. It was evidence that Liverpool’s younger attackers can carry both responsibility and threat on a major European stage.
