Arsenal’s search for a right-back has led them towards one of the most recognisable names on the market, at least in exploratory terms. According to TEAMtalk, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been discussed internally and via intermediaries as Premier League clubs assess whether there is any route to a deal from Real Madrid.

The current picture, though, is far calmer than the noise around it. Despite contact being made with Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, the player is not actively looking to leave Madrid and a January transfer is not presently expected. That is the key detail in all of this, and it shapes the entire situation.

Arsenal are understood to be among the clubs approached as part of checks on Alexander-Arnold’s market. That makes obvious sense. He is 27, highly experienced, proven at elite level and operating in a position where top clubs are constantly alert to opportunity.

From an Arsenal perspective, this feels more like intelligent market awareness than a move advancing towards negotiation. Clubs at that level rarely ignore information on players of this calibre, particularly when their circumstances appear fluid. Real Madrid’s recruitment of Denzel Dumfries has naturally altered the conversation around Alexander-Arnold’s role, especially after he made more than 20 starts in his first season in Spain following his 2025 departure from Liverpool.

There is also the England angle. Missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad raised questions around his standing, even if his subsequent recall underlined that his quality remains respected. For interested clubs, that blend of pedigree and possible availability will always command attention.

For now, the decisive factor is the player’s own outlook and Madrid’s lack of intention to sanction a mid-season departure. Alexander-Arnold is not contemplating an exit at this stage, and there is no sign of an active effort to force one. Sources indicate the matter may be revisited after the season if circumstances change, but that is very different from a move gathering pace for January.

That distinction matters. Exploratory contact happens constantly at the top end of the game. Intermediaries sounding out clubs does not automatically mean a transfer is developing. In this case, it appears more accurate to describe the situation as one being watched closely rather than one moving towards resolution.

It also reflects the scarcity of top-level right-backs in the market. When one potentially becomes available, even hypothetically, the leading clubs take notice.
