January can change careers quickly, and for Alejandro Balde it may become the month that forces a decision. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona left-back has barely featured at the start of the season and could soon reassess where he stands.

This is not complicated. Footballers can accept competition. What they struggle with is irrelevance. Balde has played only 12 minutes across Barcelona’s first eight matches, all of them coming late in the 7-2 LaLiga win over Racing. For a player who was once first choice on the left and a regular in Spain squads after the 2022 World Cup, that is a serious drop.

Barcelona’s summer changed the landscape. The squad has been remodelled heavily, with Hamza, Gordon, Bisiwu, Adeyemi, Rodri, Cancelo, Gabriel Jesus and Livakovic coming in, while Marcus Rashford, Ronald Araujo, Hector Fort, Ferran Torres, Robert Lewandowski and Marc Casado were among those to move on. A bigger squad creates depth, but it also creates losers. Right now, Balde looks like one of them.

The key point in this Barcelona situation is simple, Balde is no longer close to the top of the queue. Last season he had already seen Joao Cancelo move ahead of him in the second half of the campaign. Now, under Hansi Flick, Xavi Espart has also overtaken him. That leaves Balde as the third-choice option at left-back, which is a problem for any ambitious 21-year-old trying to revive momentum.

Flick’s thinking appears clear. He has reportedly detected a stagnation in Balde’s level, both in matches and in training, and wants stronger competition at left-back to raise standards. Fine. Managers do that all the time. But if the competition ends with one player essentially disappearing from the rotation, there comes a point where the player has to respond in the market rather than on the pitch.

That is where January becomes relevant. Balde still has this season and one more left on his contract, which gives Barcelona some protection, but it does not remove the issue. If minutes do not improve, the player has every reason to revisit his future.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Manchester United hold a firm interest in Balde. That alone does not guarantee a move, but it does matter. Clubs do not keep monitoring a player in this situation by accident. Balde is young, quick, experienced at elite level and clearly needs a reset. Those are precisely the sort of market opportunities that attract Premier League sides.

His agent Jorge Mendes added fuel without saying very much, insisting that “Balde estará bien en el futuro, no os preocupéis” and later, again on the subject of the defender’s future, “estará bien en el futuro”. Agents speak like this when they want to calm things down publicly while keeping options alive privately. It is standard business.
