Pep Guardiola is expected back at the Etihad next week when Manchester City host PSG in the Champions League, and the timing matters. This will be the club’s first home game since being found guilty on the majority of the 115 Premier League charges, a story that has shifted the mood around City from routine elite-level scrutiny to something much harsher.

According to BBC Sport, Guardiola will be in attendance for the European heavyweight meeting, his first return to the stadium since leaving at the end of last season after a decade in charge. His appearance guarantees attention, because he remains inseparable from the most successful era in Manchester City history, and because he has made his position on the case crystal clear.

Earlier this month, an independent commission found City guilty of all charges related to breaches of Premier League financial regulations between 2009-10 and 2017-18. The league’s report stated the club falsely inflated commercial revenues by £830m through “sham” contracts. City continue to deny wrongdoing and have appealed.

Guardiola’s response was direct and entirely in character. He said, “I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever,” before adding, “I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran [Soriano], the players, staff, Enzo [Maresca] and you, our unique supporters.” He closed with, “Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all.”

Before PSG, City go to Anfield to face Liverpool in what should be a fierce Premier League occasion. Then comes the European test, with Enzo Maresca leading a side that will be measured for resilience as much as quality. Guardiola’s presence in the stands adds symbolism, though not necessarily comfort. Sentiment does not alter legal findings, and nostalgia does not win football matches.

Still, the scale of Guardiola’s legacy is not up for debate. He delivered six Premier League titles, the Champions League, three FA Cups and five League Cups. He also said in November 2024 that he “will be here” even if City were relegated. That line now carries even more weight.

From a pleased Manchester City supporter’s perspective, this report lands exactly as many fans would want. Guardiola showing up for the PSG game sends a message, and it is a strong one. He did not duck the noise when he was manager, and he is not ducking it now. When he says, “I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever,” supporters will read that as loyalty, not theatre.

There is also something reassuring in the way he backed everyone at the club, from the ownership down to Enzo Maresca and the fans. In a week when rivals will turn every headline into a verdict on City’s identity, that matters. Fans know the appeal is ongoing. Fans also know the team still has huge fixtures to play, and the PSG match is one of them.
