Virgil van Dijk Offers Liverpool Injury Reassurance Ahead of Brentford Clash

Virgil van Dijk has offered Liverpool a welcome measure of reassurance ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Brentford, suggesting that the calf injury sustained against Manchester City should not prevent him from returning to the starting line-up.

For a player whose presence has become almost inseparable from Liverpool’s defensive identity, Wednesday evening presented an unfamiliar experience. Van Dijk watched from the bench as Andoni Iraola’s side secured a remarkable 6-3 Champions League victory over LASK, before eventually being introduced during a chaotic second half.

The decision reflected both the Dutchman’s recent injury concerns and the growing importance of managing his workload across an increasingly demanding campaign.

Liverpool’s captain suffered a minor calf problem during Sunday’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, prompting Iraola to exercise caution ahead of the European fixture.

Van Dijk subsequently admitted that his introduction against LASK had come as something of a surprise.

“I didn’t expect to come on whatsoever. It was a surprise. I’m still recovering a bit [after getting a kick to the calf against City],” said Van Dijk.

“It had been a long time since I didn’t start a game like that. I still did everything I could off the pitch to help the team. It was unusual for me [not starting] but it’s part of life.
