Arsenal go into the return of Premier League action with a familiar problem, too many important players carrying issues at the same time. That is the reality laid out in the latest update from Standard Sport , and it leaves Mikel Arteta balancing risk, availability and plain necessity before Leeds arrive at the Emirates Stadium.

There is no need to dress it up. A squad can absorb one or two injuries. Once they start stacking up across defence, midfield and attack, every selection becomes a calculation. Arsenal are there now. Kai Havertz and Christos Tzolis are sidelined, Declan Rice prompted concern after withdrawing from England duty, Martin Odegaard has been managing his own issue, and Ezri Konsa has returned early for assessment. That is a lot of noise before a ball has even been kicked this weekend.

Some of it is manageable. Some of it is not. The broad picture is that Arsenal have had “some good news” with players returning to training, but there are still enough unresolved cases to make this more than a routine pre-match fitness bulletin.

The biggest immediate concern is up front. Havertz suffered a hamstring issue while away with Germany, a week before Tzolis picked up his own hamstring injury for Greece. Hamstring problems are rarely worth guessing on too early. Clubs always wait for scans, then assess response to treatment, then set a realistic timeline. That is exactly where Arsenal are with Havertz.

The report states that he “has avoided another serious injury setback” and that any absence should be measured in “weeks rather than months”. That matters. It is still a blow, but there is a clear difference between missing a handful of matches and losing a forward for a large chunk of the autumn.

Tzolis looks the more immediate loss. He “saw an early goal ruled out” against the Netherlands and then quickly went down with a hamstring injury. The details from Greece were not encouraging in the moment. He “went down and covered his face with his shirt” and, according to Ivan Jovanovic, initially refused to come off. Players know when something has gone. That reaction usually tells you enough.

Early reports suggest he could miss up to three weeks, with Leeds, Lille, Nottingham Forest and Bayern Munich all potentially coming too soon. If that proves accurate, Arsenal are suddenly short of options in a run where rotation is not a luxury, it is essential.

This is where squad-building gets tested. Arsenal have invested to create depth, but depth is only useful if the next line is ready to contribute real minutes, not just fill a bench. Losing Havertz and Tzolis at the same time means somebody else has to produce, quickly.
