There are summers when a club reshapes itself by spending heavily, and there are summers when wisdom lies in holding firm. Liverpool have managed both. In keeping Cody Gakpo and bringing in Bradley Barcola, they have strengthened the attack in two different ways, one through continuity, the other through ambition.

Gakpo attracted major interest during the window, with Manchester City and Tottenham both linked, but Liverpool’s stance never softened once it became clear there was no appetite to weaken the forward line. It has already looked a smart call. The Dutch international has begun the campaign with the sharpness and authority of a player fully at ease in his surroundings, and that sense of certainty matters in a side chasing momentum.

Sergio Aguero believes Liverpool made the correct decision. “Keeping good players is always positive,” Aguero said. “Sometimes a player might not feel comfortable in his position, with the manager or at the club, and that’s when he wants to leave.

“But if (Gakpo) is comfortable with the manager and understands what the manager wants, it’s important to keep him.

“Liverpool is a very difficult opponent to beat, particularly at Anfield, and keeping players like Gakpo is good for the club.

“I think City were waiting until the last moment regarding Enzo Fernandez. His fee was very high, so they had to choose. I think it was either Enzo or Gakpo, and they ultimately chose Enzo.”

That assessment gets to the heart of Liverpool’s thinking. Gakpo offers goals, intelligence and balance from the left, and he remains one of the most reliable attacking options in the squad. If a player of that calibre is settled, trusted and productive, the case for selling quickly falls away.

And yet Liverpool have still moved boldly in the market. Barcola arrives with a growing reputation and with the sort of profile that excites supporters, direct, quick and inventive in one against one situations. His best work has often come from the left flank too, which sets up a fascinating contest for places.
