Is the Away Goals Rule Still Used? What Happens Now in Champions League Knockouts
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Is the Away Goals Rule Still Used? What Happens Now in Champions League Knockouts
  • Overview: UEFA abolished the away goals rule in 2021. Here is what replaced it, why it was scrapped, and how two-legged ties are now decided....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by Soccer2026 Global editorial monitoring desk.

For more than 50 years, the away goals rule decided some of the most famous ties in European football: if two teams finished level on aggregate, the side that had scored more goals away from home went through. That rule is gone. UEFA abolished it for all of its club competitions from the 2021-22 season onwards, and many fans still expect it to apply when a knockout tie finishes level. It does not, and understanding the replacement changes how you watch the second leg.

The current rule is straightforward. If a two-legged tie is level on aggregate after 180 minutes, the match goes to 30 minutes of extra time, played as two 15-minute halves. Goals scored in extra time count exactly the same wherever they are scored; there is no extra weight for an away goal. If the teams are still level after 120 minutes, the tie is decided by a penalty shootout, starting with five kicks each and then sudden death if needed.

UEFA gave two main reasons for scrapping the rule. First, the home advantage it was designed to balance had shrunk. When the rule was introduced in 1965, travelling was harder and away teams rarely won; by 2021, UEFA's own figures showed home wins had fallen from around 61 percent in the mid-1970s to about 47 percent, while away wins had risen from 19 percent to 30 percent. Second, the rule had started to discourage attacking football, because home teams in first legs feared conceding a goal that would count double.

The extra-time problem made the unfairness concrete. Under the old system, if a second leg went to extra time, the away team had an extra 30 minutes to score a goal that still carried extra weight, while the home team effectively needed to score twice to cancel out one away goal. Removing the rule fixed that imbalance and simplified the maths for everyone: every goal now counts once, no matter where it is scored or when it comes.

Tactically, the change has made ties more open. First-leg home teams no longer sit back to protect against a costly away goal, and second-leg teams cannot defend a narrow away-goals lead by simply keeping the aggregate level. Fitness and squad depth matter more, because ties are more likely to reach extra time and penalties, and coaches must plan substitutions for 120 minutes rather than 90. Late goals in the second leg now change the aggregate only, not a hidden tiebreaker.

So the next time a commentator mentions away goals, treat it as history, not as a live rule. Check the aggregate, remember that extra time comes first, and expect penalties if the tie is still level after 120 minutes. The drama is still there; it has simply moved from a calculator to the penalty spot, which is exactly where UEFA wanted it.

The old rule also produced some of the competition's most debated nights, which is why older fans remember it fondly. Tottenham's comeback against Ajax in 2019, for example, turned entirely on away goals, and ties like that felt decided by a hidden calculation as much as by the football. Under the current rules, the same tie would have gone to extra time, and the drama would have played out on the pitch rather than on a calculator. Whether that is better is a matter of taste, but it is certainly simpler to follow.

One practical tip for watching second legs now is to ignore the venue when the aggregate is level and focus on fitness and substitutions instead. With no away-goals safety net, coaches keep attacking options on the bench for extra time, and a fresh winger in the 105th minute can matter more than any tactical tweak. If the tie reaches penalties, remember that the team that finished higher in the league phase does not get any advantage in the shootout itself; it only earned the home second leg.
