How Does the Champions League League Phase Work? The 36-Team Format Explained
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: How Does the Champions League League Phase Work? The 36-Team Format Explained
  • Overview: The Champions League no longer has a group stage. Here is how the 36-team league phase, the draw, and the road to the knockouts actually work....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by Soccer2026 Global editorial monitoring desk.

Since the 2024-25 season, the UEFA Champions League has used a league phase instead of the old group stage, and that single change confuses even long-time fans. There are no more groups of four, no more home-and-away ties against the same three opponents, and no more dropping down into the Europa League. Instead, 36 clubs share one league table, each playing eight different opponents, and the final standings decide who goes straight through, who faces a playoff, and who goes home.

Each club plays eight matches: four at home and four away, against eight different opponents drawn from four seeding pots of nine clubs. The pots are based on UEFA club coefficients, with the title holders placed in pot one. Every club faces two opponents from each pot, one at home and one away, so even the strongest teams meet other top seeds while smaller clubs get a genuine mix of fixtures. Clubs from the same country cannot meet in the league phase, and no club can face more than two clubs from any single other country.

Points work exactly as before: three for a win and one for a draw, and all 36 clubs are ranked in one table. The top eight at the end of the league phase go directly to the round of 16. Clubs finishing from ninth to 24th enter a two-legged knockout playoff round, with the eight winners joining the top eight. Clubs finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated from Europe completely, which makes every matchday matter right up to the final round of fixtures.

One important detail is that the league phase is not a live Swiss pairing system where opponents change after each result. All eight opponents are drawn in advance, so a club knows its full fixture list from the start. That means fixture difficulty is uneven by design: two clubs can finish on the same points having faced very different opponents. Tiebreakers, starting with goal difference, therefore matter, and a single heavy defeat can be costly in a tight table.

For fans, the practical way to follow the table is to watch the cut lines rather than the top alone. The race for eighth place, which avoids the playoff entirely, is often as tense as the title race, and the battle to finish 24th instead of 25th decides whether a club's European season continues into February. A club in 20th place with two games left is still alive, while a club in ninth is not safe from a difficult playoff draw.

The format also changes how coaches plan. With no return fixture to fix a bad night, squad rotation and away form carry extra weight, and a slow start is harder to repair than it was across six group games. For supporters, that is the real appeal of the new system: more big matches early, fewer dead rubbers, and a table where almost every club still has something to play for on the last matchday.

It is also worth knowing how qualification feeds the league phase, because that explains why some leagues send more clubs than others. Most places are allocated by association coefficient, which ranks leagues by their clubs' European results over recent seasons, with the champions of smaller leagues entering through qualifying rounds. Two extra places, the European Performance Spots, go to the two associations whose clubs performed best in the previous season, which is how a fifth club from a top league can qualify. The system rewards recent success rather than history alone.

Finally, remember that the league phase is only the first act. The clubs that finish in the top eight rest while the playoffs are played, then enter the round of 16 against a playoff winner, with the higher league-phase finisher hosting the second leg from the round of 16 onwards. That home second leg is a real advantage in a tight tie, and it is another reason the fight for the top eight matters so much. Follow the cut lines, count the points, and the new format quickly feels as familiar as the old groups did.
