Every Champions League club must register a squad for the competition, and that squad is not simply its whole first team. UEFA caps the main list at 25 players, reserves places for homegrown players, and allows an unlimited youth list for young players. The rules shape transfer decisions, because a club that ignores them can find itself unable to register a new signing.

The main squad list, known as List A, may contain at most 25 players. Within that 25, at least eight places are reserved for locally trained players: four must be club-trained, meaning they spent three years at the club between the ages of 15 and 21, and four must be association-trained, meaning they spent three years at another club in the same national association in that age range.

If a club cannot fill all eight locally trained places, its squad is reduced accordingly. A club with only six qualifying locally trained players, for example, can register a squad of just 23 rather than 25. The quota cannot be filled by simply naming extra senior players: the places are reserved, and unused places are lost, which is a real cost for clubs that neglect youth development.

Alongside List A, clubs maintain a List B for young players. A player qualifies for List B if he was born on or after a cut-off date set by UEFA for that season and has been eligible to play for the club for at least two uninterrupted years. List B players can be added throughout the competition and do not count toward the 25-man limit.

This is why young academy players can appear in Champions League matches even when the senior squad looks full. List B is designed to encourage youth development by removing the registration barrier for players who came through the club, and it is one reason why clubs invest heavily in academies: a productive academy effectively expands the squad beyond 25.

Squad rules directly affect who a club can sign. A club with a full 25-man list must sell or leave out a player before registering a new senior signing, which is why some transfers are delayed until an exit is confirmed. A club short of club-trained players may prioritise signing a player who qualifies as association-trained, or promote an academy player, simply to fill a reserved place.

The rules also affect loan decisions. A player sent on loan for a season does not occupy a List A place while he is away, but a player recalled in January must be registered if he is to play in Europe, which may require another player to be removed. Clubs plan their European squads window by window, balancing league needs against the stricter European limits.

A player who is not registered cannot play in the Champions League, however important he is in the league. Clubs occasionally leave a high-profile signing out of the European squad because the numbers do not work, and the omission is always a story, because it reveals a planning failure or a deliberate choice to prioritise other players.

For supporters, the squad list is worth checking when a new signing is announced. If the club's List A is already full, ask who will be left out or sold to make room. The answer often explains a transfer that otherwise looks puzzling, and it shows how a rule that seems administrative can shape the football on the pitch.

Squad rules also reward long-term thinking in a way that transfer fees alone do not. A club that develops three or four club-trained players does not just save money on signings; it protects its full 25-man European squad, giving its coach more options in every round. In that sense, the homegrown quota is not a restriction on big clubs but an incentive to build academies that produce players capable of playing at Champions League level.
