Expected Assists (xA) Explained in Soccer: What xA Measures and What It Misses
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Expected Assists (xA) Explained in Soccer: What xA Measures and What It Misses
  • Overview: Expected assists (xA) grades every pass by the quality of the chance it creates. Learn how xA is calculated, why it beats the assists column, and where it still falls short....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by Soccer2026 Global editorial monitoring desk.

Expected assists, usually written as xA, answers a question the traditional assists column cannot: how good was the pass, regardless of whether the teammate scored. Every completed pass that leads to a shot is given a value between zero and one, based on how likely the resulting shot is to become a goal. A simple sideways pass that leads to a hopeful shot scores low, while a precise through ball that leaves a striker one-on-one scores high.

xA models look at where the pass started and ended, the type of pass, and how much danger it created. Passes into the penalty area, cutbacks to the edge of the box, and through balls that split a defensive line all tend to score highly, because the shots they produce are historically more likely to go in. Crosses, corners and free kicks that lead to shots also carry xA, since they are passes that create chances too.

Crucially, xA is credited even if the shot is missed, saved or blocked, because the value belongs to the pass, not the finish. That is what separates xA from assists: a playmaker can create three excellent chances in a match, watch all three go begging, and still finish with an xA total that shows how creative he really was. Over a season, that separation is powerful.

Assists depend on teammates finishing, which makes them noisy over short periods. A winger who sets up two tap-ins in one game can look twice as creative as a midfielder who creates five better chances that are all missed. Assists also depend on definitions that vary between providers, with some counting deflections, rebounds and even won penalties differently, which makes comparisons messy.

xA smooths out that luck by grading the chance itself. A player with high xA and low assists is usually either unlucky or playing with poor finishers, and his assist numbers often improve over time as finishing regresses toward normal. Scouts and analysts therefore use xA to find creative players before the assists column catches up, especially in lower leagues where finishing quality varies wildly.

xA only measures passes that lead directly to a shot, so it misses the pass before the pass, the run that drags defenders away, and the dribble that opens the space. A midfielder who switches play to start an attack, or a full-back whose overlapping run creates room for the cross, may earn little xA despite being essential to the goal. Different data providers also use different models, so xA values for the same pass can differ between sources.

xA also says nothing about defensive work, leadership or decision-making in the final third. A player can rack up xA by attempting low-percentage crosses all game, while a smarter player who waits for the right moment creates fewer but better chances. Always read xA alongside key passes, shot-creating actions and plain old match footage, and be wary of judging a player on a handful of games.

Start with per-90 figures rather than season totals, because totals reward players who simply play more minutes. Compare players in similar roles: a deep-lying playmaker and a winger create chances differently, so their xA profiles will differ even when both are excellent. Then check the gap between xA and actual assists, which hints at luck, finishing quality, or both.

If a player's xA is much higher than his assists over a long period, do not automatically assume he is underrated: check whether his team wastes chances, whether his passes lead to low-quality shots from poor positions, and whether the sample is large enough to trust. Used carefully, xA is one of the best tools a fan has for seeing creativity that the scoresheet hides.
