Every Champions League season needs its underdog story: the small club that refuses to follow the script, beats a giant, and makes the whole continent pay attention. Champions League underdog runs through history show that these miracles are not random. They follow patterns of tactical discipline, fearless coaching, and a squad that peaks at exactly the right moment, and they remind fans why the competition still matters beyond the usual winners.

Underdog runs start with a tactical identity that bigger clubs struggle to break down. Deep defensive blocks, rapid counter-attacks, and set-piece precision can neutralise a huge gap in individual quality over two legs. A favourite that dominates possession but cannot break down a compact defence grows frustrated, takes risks, and leaves space behind, which is exactly what the underdog wants.

Timing matters just as much. Underdogs often peak in spring, when their squad is settled and their key players are fit, while favourites may be juggling a title race and carrying injuries. A two-legged tie also gives the smaller club a second chance: survive the away leg, and the home crowd can carry them through the return.

Porto's 2004 triumph under José Mourinho remains the gold standard: a well-drilled, tactically ruthless side that beat Manchester United and then outplayed Monaco in the final. Ajax in 2019 came within seconds of the final with a young team playing fearless attacking football, beating Real Madrid and Juventus away from home along the way. Villarreal's run to the semi-finals in 2022, built on organisation and patience, showed that a club from a small town can outthink Europe's richest teams.

Earlier eras had their own miracles. Nottingham Forest won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980 after promotion from the second division, a feat that looks impossible today. Steaua Bucharest won the 1986 final on penalties, and Red Star Belgrade lifted the trophy in 1991. These runs belong to a different financial era, but they prove that the competition's romance predates modern money.

Most underdog runs end before the final, and the reasons are structural. Squad depth is the biggest gap: a favourite can rotate world-class players across competitions, while an underdog relies on the same eleven, and fatigue accumulates. Injuries to one or two key players can end a run overnight, because there is no equivalent replacement.

Experience matters too. Semi-finals and finals are decided by fine margins, and clubs that have been there before manage the occasion better. Underdogs can also be victims of their own success: a brilliant run raises expectations, and the freedom that made them dangerous disappears once they are expected to win.

The league phase gives underdogs more chances to cause upsets, because they face eight different opponents rather than three, and a single famous win can keep them alive for the play-offs. But it also makes a deep run harder: there are more matches, more travel, and more chances for depth to tell. The play-off round, though, is a gift for a well-organised underdog, because two-legged ties reward tactical preparation over squad value.

For fans, underdog runs are the competition's heartbeat. The favourites will always be there in May, but the stories we retell for decades are the ones where a smaller club refused to accept its place. The next one is already building somewhere, probably in a stadium you have never visited. That unpredictability is precisely why the tournament still captivates neutrals: the favourites may own the odds, but the underdogs own the stories, and every season needs at least one story that nobody saw coming.
